This post is part of our special coverage of the 2012 London Olympics .

Lvov Region (RUS), Zhytomyr region (RUS), REGION OF UKRAINE (UKR), REGION OF UKRAINE (RUS): these bizarre names were used the last week of July at the official website of the London 2012 Olympics to describe the places of birth for at least a dozen [en] Ukrainian-born athletes representing the Russian Federation (eg, volleyball Khtey Taras , [ru], the judoka Vera Moskalyuk , [ru], the rhythmic gymnast Karolina Sevastyanova , [ru], rower Korovashkov Alexey , [in]).

Chances are that the errors came there by accident of the Russian Olympic Committee officials responsible for filling out the forms with the biographical data of the athletes and to convey information to the organizers. With several members of the Russian team born in the Caucasus and Central Asia was also confusion [in] in their birthplaces.

Many Internet users in Ukraine these confusions they found offensive but also fairly typical - a sort of Freudian slip postimperial that reflects what is often perceived in Russia as a possessive attitude toward its neighbors.

In response, it launched [uk; in] a protest on the Internet:

On the official site of the Olympics 2012, Ukraine has become part of Russia [...].

I propose to write angry letters to the Russian Olympic Committee ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) and the organizers of the Olympic Games in London ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ). A sample letter [in English] is down.

Dear Committee (London 2012/Olímpico):

I write to express my deep disgust on his mistake about the birthplace of Russian athletes. For example, according to the website of London 2012, Korovashov born in Ukraina region (RUS) and Khtey http://www.london2012.com/athlete/korovashkov-alexey-1010562/ born in Lvov region ( RUS) http://www.london2012.com/athlete/khtey-taras-1013482/

It is well known that Ukraine is an independent country and not part of the Russian Federation, and Lvov (Lviv correct spelling) is located in Ukraine (it was one of the four cities for Euro 2012)!

I am really disappointed by these 'mistakes' and demand that will be corrected immediately!

Kostyantyn Hryshchenko [in], Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, intervened and informed of the measures taken by your office via Twitter. Below are the messages Hryshchenko [uk] for the online newspaper Ukrainska Pravda.

@ Ukrpravda_news :

@ Gryshchenko Kostyantyn, can you comment this? What does "region Ukraine"? Will there be some reactions of [Foreign]? pic.twitter.com/fZsa13P7

Screenshot of Ukrainska Pravda tweeted for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, which features a screenshot of the page with the biography of the Russian gymnast born in Ukraine in the London 2012 website.

@ Gryshchenko :

@ Ukrpravda_news The word "region" definitely should not be there. A silly mistake, even from the standpoint of English grammar. Find out who the error and will correct it.

@ Ukrpravda_news :

@ Gryshchenko Tennos tuned!

@ Gryshchenko :

@ Ukrpravda_news Just ask our embassy in Britain to contact the organizing committee of the Olympics, to correct this error.

In the end, certainly corrected some errors (although somewhat inconsistently) - while others persist. What was "REGION LVOV (RUS)" on page Khtey Taras has become "REGION LVOV ()", the "REGION Zhitomir (RUS)" from Vera Moskalyuk is now "REGION Zhitomir ()", and place initial birth of Karolina Sevastyanova of "REGION UKRAINE (UKR)" is now "UKRAINE (UKR)." Alexey Korovashkov still appears with "REGION UKRAINA (RUS)" in his biography:

The error and the consequent reaction was not lost on Ukrainian Twitter.

The user @ MeybeGiuliia mentioned [in] Sol Campbell, an English football player and retired, who in May thought it was not certain that England fans were in Ukraine for Euro 2012 (the fans were anyway, and after informed Campbell, through a mock protest in Donetsk [in] which had been "wrong"):

ATT Britain Olympic Committee: Ukraine is not a region of Russia, is a COUNTRY. Please, ask Sol Campbell.

Joel Draper (@ DraperMovies) mentioned [in] the Russia-Ukraine dispute, along with two other leading up to the Olympics, including the confusion of the flags of South Korea and North Korea (GV text on the subject is here ):

Yesterday was the problem of confusion of flags, today is that Ukraine is a "region" of Russia and a player has been booked Welsh and English # London2012 [London 2012].

JaWill (@ lgyyjaw) used the tag # olympicgeography [Olympic geography] in this summary [in] of the situation:

Ukraine is a region of Russia. # olympicgeography # London2012

The user @ Voloschka wrote [in]:

Do these people even learn geography? The official website of the London Olympics 2012 is a mess. http://www.kyivpost.com/content/sport/russian-olympic-committee-annexes-ukraine-region.html ...

Jonathan Campion (@ jonathancampion) wrote this [in], and linked with the still uncorrected page Sevastyanova Karolina's biography:

This has not gone down well in Kiev: an Olympic gymnast of the "region of Ukraine" of the Russian Federation. http://www.london2012.com/athlete/sevastyanova-karolina-1013451/ ...

And so did [in] Nikolaus von Twickel (@ niktwick):

Is not going to risk a war for a beautiful sportsmenka [female athlete]? Russian gymnast jearlemsk MT @ # Olympics [Olympics] in the region of "Ukraine" http://www.london2012.com/athlete/sevastyanova-karolina-1013451/ ...

And Edward Lucas of The Economist (@ edwardlucas) [es]:

Ukraine is a "region" in the eyes Russians (according to the biography of an Olympic athlete) http://l2012.cm/QD92zX

On Facebook, Ukrainian journalist Vakhtang Kipiani also published a screenshot [ru] of Karolina Sevastyanova page, along with the opening words of the Soviet anthem :

"An unbreakable bond ..." Yuck.

Kipiani's post generated nearly 70 comments and then some of them [uk, ru].

Yuri Beresten:

The specter of the Soviet Union began to stalk Europe again!

Oksana Stebelska:

This is simply unacceptable ...

Vlodko Tomash:

A disaster ... oy-oh ... unacceptable ... while we close our eyes to the fact that [ucrananios state officials] are [stealing] billion and condemning the country to annihilation [...].

Pastukhov Oleh:

Only an ordinary treason in the sport to which all are accustomed. [...] People have been selling their country for gold and food for thousands of years.

Victoria Veremiienko (in response to Oleh Pastukhov):

[...] I would not call it treason - if a country offers decent working conditions [...], why [an athlete] would refuse (and for an athlete, this is work)? Similarly, one can consider a betrayal of thousands of Ukrainians go abroad to earn money.

Karolina Sevastyanova, Russian rhythmic gymnast born in Ukraine - and the "face" of this controversy, there seems to be aware of the seriousness of the situation. In his Vkontakte page [ru], a friend published an article [ru] about the gaffe, but the comments on this post there was mention of the protest campaign with letters or the intervention of senior Ukrainian officials . Fans and friends of the athlete are mainly Sevastyanova wishing good luck, she answered with chat and discussion [ru] was generally very friendly and apolitical

Zlatoslav Kalinich:

Accept our congratulations! Ukraine is proud to now have an athlete as well)))

Maxim Sedoplatov:

Chances are that Karolina was born in Ukraine, and Ukraine, but lives and represents Russia. And organizers must have thought that the region where Karolina was born (Ukraine) is part of Russia. Is that true?

[...]

[I was right!] In addition, Karolina was born in Kiev! Well, well, nothing surprises me here! Kiev Women have always been known for their beauty!

Karolina Sevastyanova:

Huge thanks) I am very pleased! If I was born in Kiev. But from my earliest childhood I lived in Moscow. And of course, Russia is my home country)

Natasha Kosinova:

Karolina, what passport you use? ¿Russian or Ukrainian?

Karolina Sevastyanova:

I never lived in Ukraine! Only I was born there.

[...]

The Russian passport.

On Twitter, where Sevastyanova (@ Karolisha_S) has about 850 followers, wrote [ru]:

After reporting that I was born in Kiev, I'm taking orders exclusively from Ukrainian friends!
