The year was 2005 when Liverpool won on penalties in the Champions League against AC Milan in Istanbul. Days later, a Briton named Michael Shields, a fan of Liverpool, spent a short holiday in Bulgaria. He was convicted of attempted murder.

According to information found on the net, ten Liverpool fans in an evident state of drunkenness, late at night (or early morning), the launched a fight with Martin Georgiev, a Bulgarian waiter. He was beaten, kicked and beaten with a stone about 4.5 kilograms. Nine witnesses, including their own Georgiev, testified against Michael Shields as present at the crime scene and the person who perpetrated it.

Michael Shields was sentenced to 15 years, which have fallen to 10 after appeals. However, after knowing the facts, Graham Stankey, another fan, confessed to attacking Georgiev. There is no connection between the two Britons, although the latter has a history of violence. He confessed when he heard the news of the arrest of Michael Shields. The police arrested him but released him. Then he went to the hotel where he was staying to arrest him again but he was gone. Michael Shields was sleeping in the adjacent room. He was taken to police station where he was recognized by some witnesses.

The Liverpool players Michael Shields defend and believe in his innocence. The shirts could read: "Free Michael Shields" (released Michael Shields). The English Football Association does not intend to take any legal action against the club for that.
