One of the more recently established tournaments in Latin America, organized by CONMEBOL member associations and with the best teams in each league, starting to be played in 2002 and having big games that will last for many years.

The Copa Sudamericana 2002 (officially named, for reasons of patronage, Copa Nissan Sudamericana) had the first champion to the club San Lorenzo de Almagro (Argentina), who had qualified after winning the Copa Mercosur 2001, the predecessor of this event, at the Athletic Nacional Medellin (Colombia) won the first leg 4-3 and earning a draw in making local zero.
