Messi named best player in La Liga

The Professional Football League has awarded Spain's Lionel Messi as the best player in the 2008/2009 season, where Barcelona was left with the League, Copa del Rey and Champions League. This award is a custom in the Spanish league, and the awards are given based on votes from the coaches.

Besides the trophy for best player, Messi was named the star attractions at a ceremony held in the city of Madrid, where he also rewarded his teammates Daniel Alves (best defender), Xavi Hernandez (best external drive) , Andres Iniesta (best midfielder) and Sergio Busquets (player revelation). Josep Guardiola was named the best coach. Among non-Barca are winning for best goalkeeper Iker Casillas and Juan Carlos Valeron Deportivo La Coruna, in recognition of "fair play".
