Italian Giovanni Trapattoni was officially appointed new coach of the Irish, in an announcement by the president of the federation of this country, David Blood, who declared:

"The wait's over. We have appointed Giovanni Trapattoni as coach of the Republic of Ireland. We want to thank everyone for their patience during the process, and now we will focus on qualifying for the World Cup. "
