What is a Free Agent? Free agents ( 'free agents') are the players who have completed their contracts with the teams to which they belonged and they can negotiate with any team. As we explained in his day, in the NBA, while duration of the contract with a club, the player is a mere commodity that can be traded to the taste of the franchise at any time. Only free agents can choose their destiny.

What is a restricted free agent? Restricted free agents may negotiate with any team a new contract, but remain in the home team if it matches or exceeds the salary offer from the team. This is the case of Jose Calderon with the Raptors.

Recall that the NBA is not going for termination clauses. You're on salary cap. Each team has X amount of money to pay the contracts of their players. And the salary cap is the same for all teams. If you pass, fine.

In the free-agent market could find some very juicy names as unrestricted free agents: Sam Cassell, Chris Duhon, Jamaal Magloire, Eduardo Najera, Theo Ratliff, Matt Barnes, Ricky Davis, Jason Williams, Carlos Arroyo, Michael Finley, Kurt Thomas or Antawn Jamison.

Restricted free agents we have the likes of: Josh Smith, Tony Allen, Emeka Okafor, Ben Gordon, Luol Deng, Delonte West, Daniel Gibson, Monta Ellis, Nenad Krstic, Andre Iguodala, Jose Calderon and Carlos Delfino.

Then there are some players whose teams have first rights to negotiate a new contract with them, like Baron Davis, Gilbert Arenas, Allen Iverson and Ron Artest. They will not let their stars get away so easily.
