To a greater or lesser degree of animation has always been seen as something exclusive for children. Then thanks to big studios like Dreamworks or Disney, in his later years at least, the genre was designed so that both boys could enjoy large rooms alike. But Wrinkles differs in being totally directed at adults with a history that a priori might seem unattractive: the lives of two elderly in a nursing home. The film based on the graphic novel and directed by Paco Ignacio Roca Ferreras, has snuck into the Goya - and pretty much at the Oscars, quite justifiably, because we have a history overwhelmingly realistic and humanly valuable. Although the film has a sad and pessimistic tone markedly achieved excellently portray the world of old age and loneliness, but also the incredible value of friendship and memories. Impossible not to be identified with what happens, especially if it is to be lived in near having parents in the same circumstances or afflicted with the painful reality of Alzheimer's as the protagonist. With a relaxed pace but not boring, Ferreras take the time to tell the life of Emilio, new host of the nursing home, their relationship with other residents and how friendship grows between him and Michael, his roommate. The magnificent hand that shows the director to make space for the characters to develop them is exquisite and appreciated the dramatic moments that season with a share of humor, rare but always effective.
Wrinkles, must be said, is a truly daring film for the times you have to see, not only for its apparent subject matter or tone of melodrama as a genre led to animation, but because it is a story that sooner or later We all will live somehow. It's a movie that redeems the value of human relationships, from friendship to love. The atmosphere can reach us as too heavily claustrophobic and bleak, but in comparison with the graphic novel certainly is much more luminous. Yet make no mistake, this is an animation that is out of the happy moments of many of its kind, is an adult history, full of great moments, intense and deeply melancholic. Aesthetically very similar to The Triplets of Belleville or L'Illusionist, this is a story closer to the gloom and desolation of the illusionist's grace and tenderness of the triplets, but thanks to a narrative full of dreams and flashbacks lead us through the moving eyes of the protagonists in all areas of their sad condition without being too low blows or tears handling easy. Of course it's a sad story, immensely grim at times but full of magic. It's flawless portrayal of the characters, with great subtlety how to pass the leadership of Emilio to the relationship of this with his friend and then focus on Michael and how it has affected everything. It is gratifying to see the characters and the story form a full and thoroughly armed service of the argument, an argument that if you have any failure becomes completely undetectable. The story works because the characters move and act in a credible way, because the pace is always maintained firm with a clear purpose. Personally I love a good story can be enjoyed so simple, since its argument and good preparation. At a time when 3D technology seems to flood everything Wrinkles sits like an oasis in the 2D gorgeous, unpretentious, honest and humane. Deserves applause Spanish animation hit a jump like this and show that not everything has to come from the north in this genre and that is not unique or the comedy or the smaller audience. Facing the Goya I can not risk what you go to this film because I have not seen the other nominees in its category. I feel that if we evaluate the quality of the film has great chances in front, what I can say is that this is not a film to pass if they have not already seen. Perhaps the history and context does not attract many but exactly why I urge you not to prejudice and give it a try. It is full of great scenes very well accompanied by the wonderful music of Nani García and leaves a lasting impression on most viewers.
